Valetta Montag Obituary

MONTAG – Valetta Ruth “Betty,” entered into her eternal rest Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community, York, Pa., where she resided since 2005. Born Dec. 6, 1916, in Johnstown, to the late Edgar and Zelpha (Jones) Penrod. She was married to the late Carl F. Montag Sr. for 74 years. They were the parents of five children. Betty attended Dale High School and was a cafeteria worker in the Oakland Public School in the Johnstown School District. Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by sons, Carl F. Jr. and Thomas W. Montag; grandson, Anthony M. Montag; granddaughter, Debbie Ringler; sisters, Mildred Klahre, Lula Thomas, Corinne Glass and Wilma Carbaugh; and great-grandson, Charles Fitz. Surviving to cherish her memory are daughters, Delores A. Ringler, and husband, Bill, Prescott, Ariz.; and Sharon R. Helsel, and husband, Ronald, Johnstown; son, J. Barry Montag, and wife, Renee, York, Pa.; and daughters-in-law, Sandra Montag, Dover, Pa.; and Patricia Montag, York, Pa. Surviving grandchildren are James Ringler, Prescott, Ariz.; Lori Walker, La Jolla, Calif., and husband, Rick; Scott Montag, and wife, Tracy, York, Pa.; Randolph Montag, York, Pa.; Danyelle Moyer, and husband, Michael, York Pa.; Stacie Fitz, and husband, Tom, and Kristofer Allison, and wife, Shontell, all of Johnstown. Betty also is survived by 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Betty was active in her church, Oakland United Methodist Church in Johnstown, and in her community. Life member of Oakland Fire Company ladies auxiliary, Cambria County Fire Company auxiliary and Oakland Home and Garden Club. After she moved to York in 2005, Betty became active in the Normandie Ridge auxiliary and was associated with Messiah United Methodist Church. Betty’s family meant the most to her. She and Carl, even as they were growing older, treasured the opportunities they had to care for their great-grandchildren, Amanda, Tim and Brittany Fitz. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and often tried new recipes when her children were planning to visit. Even after she became a resident of Normandie Ridge, she continued to share her cooking and baking skills there. More than that she became friends with many associated with Normandie Ridge and the family appreciates all those who were friends to her. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakland United Methodist Church, 1504 Bedford St., Johnstown, the Rev. Randy Bain, officiating. Interment, Richland Cemetery.
