MOWREY – Rev. Dr. Thelma N. 90, Johnstown, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, at Arbutus Park Manor. Born Dec. 12, 1924, in Canton, Ohio, daughter of John Peter and Clara (Osborne) Nelson. Preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Agnes. Survived by husband of 59 years, Rev. Dr. James Mowrey; children, Philip, married to the former Pamela Simmons, South Riding, Va.; Paul, married to the former Nancy Calhoun, Slippery Rock, Pa.; and Rebecca Mowrey, Lancaster; grandchildren, Stefanie Mowrey; Janie, wife of Keith Golde; Laurie, wife of Shawn Hanna; Christina, wife of Stephen Brown; and Carrie, wife of Benjamin Morton; five great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins. She received a bachelor’s degree in music from the College of Wooster. She was a music instructor at Maryville College, Tennessee. She attended McCormick Theological Seminary and graduated from United Theological Seminary. Thelma was ordained deacon and elder in the United Methodist Church in 1972. She received her doctorate of ministry at United Theological Seminary in 1982. She served at Beulah United Methodist Church, Johnstown, and First United Methodist Church, Bradford. Upon retirement, she stayed an active member at Beulah United Methodist Church and Haines City United Methodist Church, Florida. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Geisel Funeral Home, Johnstown. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Arbutus Park Manor, Pastor Paul Scruton, officiating. Please use community room entrance. Interment, Richland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Arbutus Park Manor in memory of Rev. Dr. Thelma Mowrey.
