Rev. Dr. James Mowrey Obituary

Mowrey, Rev. Dr. James, 90, Johnstown. Passed away on April 25, 2020 of natural causes following a lengthy stay at Arbutus Park Manor. Born in Sykesville, PA. Son of LeRoy and Alice (Buhite) Mowrey. Preceded in death by parents, wife Rev. Dr. Thelma Mowrey, brother Lee, and sister-in-law Linda (Donald). Survived by brother Larry (Arlene), brother Donald (Evey), children Dr. Philip (Pamela) of Chantilly, VA, Paul (Nancy) of Slippery Rock, PA, and Dr. Rebecca of Lancaster, PA., 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. James received BS in Biology from Penn State U. and was admitted to Jefferson Medical School but followed a call by God to attend Bonebrake Theological Seminary for a M.Div, continuing for S.T.M. Boston U., and D.Min, United Theological Seminary. He was a full member of the Evangelical United Brethren W PA Conference and ordained Elder of the UMC at the union. Rev. Mowrey served the Freedom Salem, Scalp Level Trinity, Scottdale Christ, Johnstown Beulah. His last charge was Bradford First serving with Thelma as a clergy couple.They retired in 1989 and resided in an Arbutus Park Retirement Community cottage. They were active in the First UMC of Haines City, FL and Beulah of Johnstown. Rev. Mowrey was a long time member of the Ministers' Chorus, actively supported Camp Allegheny in Stoystown, PA. and was very active in community leadership for over 60 years. He was a compassionate, sincere, patient, tender loving spiritual servant of our Lord and Savior and God's children. In consideration of the current social distancing, no viewing will occur. The immediate family will participate in a brief Interment at Richland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Camp Allegheny, 100 Camp Allegheny Dr., Stoystown, PA 15563 or online. The family is being served by Geisel Funeral Home - Johnstown.
