Lois Hedglin Obituary

Hedglin, Lois Joanne , began her earthly journey on November 20, 1926 in Franklin. She was the first of four children born to Gene and Molly (Applegate) Buck. She graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1944. She met her husband James at Miller-Sibley ballfield. They were married on October 25, 1946 in the former EUB Church by Rev. BE Coleman. Lois led a busy and full life. She raised nine children, and still found time to participate in other activities such as Junior Business Womens Club and various card clubs. She loved music and was an excellent dancer. Her yearbook referred to her as the Jitterbug Queen. She was a voracious reader and crossword wizard. She gardened and enjoyed picking and canning fruits and vegetables. In later years, she grew herbs and was an active member of the Somerset Herb Club for twenty-five years. Her knowledge of natural remedies and cures healed many family ailments. Her nutritional knowledge was extensive. She had a disdain for traditional medicines, preferring vitamins, minerals and supplements. Her cure-all was lemon. After her family relocated to Johnstown, she birthed her ninth child and continued her part-time employment as a waitress/hostess. Her keen mind and flawless recall were utilized in other pursuits such as hand-writing analysis and the Beulah UMC bell choir. She was a wonderful cook. For many years, she cooked the entire meal for her large family at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. She was once featured on a local TV show demonstrating cooking various deer-meat entrees a Hedglin family staple. She prepared countless dinner for youth/family nights, funerals and ladies luncheons at Beulah UMC as a member of their church and the Challengers Sunday School Class for 45 years. She enjoyed traveling in her later years. She shot her first buck at age 72 and canoed the Allegheny from Franklin to Fishermans Cove at 90. She was the oldest living direct descendant of Sebastian (Boss) Buck, and was the Grand Marshall of the 2017 Horse Thief Days 3 parade. Her sparkling disposition, along with her endless quest for knowledge, made her both an engaging conversationalist and a great traveling companion. She loved her entire family, including many unofficially-adopted neighborhood children. She was at her best while hosting family and guests in her beautiful home. Her creative talents were also expressed in sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, cross-stitch and macramé chairs. She delighted in completing thousand-piece puzzles on her dining room table. At Christmas she made hard-tack candy and at Easter Pysanka eggs. Her love of shopping resulted in a ritual Christmas present exchange that would last all day. She was matriarch of her family and her wonderful disposition will be greatly missed but never forgotten. She was surrounded by her loving family as she went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years, and her siblings Pat, Ruth & Ron (Son). She is survived by nine children, Jim (Cheryl) Hedglin, Bob (Carla) Hedglin, Susan (Mike) Urbassik, Craig Hedglin, Richard Hedglin, Sheryl (Matthew) Mihalaki, Sara (John) Timko, Saundra (Mike) Suppes, Stacey (Viswa) Mohanty, fourteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family will be received from 2 4pm and 6 - 8pm Tuesday at Geisel Funeral Home, Johnstown, where funeral services will be held 10am Wednesday, Rev. Warnick Fayette and Rev. Tom Phillips officiating. Private interment at Old Sandy Cemetery, Polk. In lieu of flowers, donations to Beulah United Methodist Church are appreciated.
