James Erwin Hedglin

HEDGLIN – James Erwin “Jim,” 89, Roxbury, passed away Dec. 19, 2015, at Windber Hospice. Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Franklin, son of William Carl and Martha (Ferson) Hedglin. Preceded in death by parents, and brother, Carl Hedglin Jr. Survived by his loving wife of 69 years, former Lois J. Buck; these loving children, James Hedglin, married to former Sheryl Moore, Polk; Robert Hedglin, married to former Carla Fernandez, Pittsburgh; Susan, married to Michael Urbassik, Polk; William Craig Hedglin, Johnstown; Richard Reid Hedglin, Johnstown; Sheryl, married to Matthew Mihalaki, Johnstown; Sarah, married to John Timko, Gillette, Wyo.; Saundra, married to Michael Suppes, Johnstown; and Stacey, married to Viswa Mohanty, Pittsburgh; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Jim graduated from Franklin High School in 1944, and lived in Franklin (Venango County) until 1963 when he came to Johnstown as a state parole agent. He had formerly worked at the YMCA as a physical director, and the Department of Highways. He retired from the parole board as a supervisor in 1988 after 30 years of state service. Mr. Hedglin enjoyed sports and hunting. He was an umpire for the Johnstown Junior League and AAABA, and also several softball leagues. He was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church, where he was active in the church and Sunday school. He had a perfect attendance record in Sunday school for over 80 years. He enjoyed helping others as indicated by his favorite phrase, “doing something for somebody.” He retired from the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole in 1988. His favorite pastime and passion was baseball. He was know to many as Mr. Baseball. He loved his family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Geisel Funeral Home, Johnstown, where funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Rev. David Stains and the Rev. Jeffrey Popson, officiating. Private interment at Sandycreek Cemetery, Polk. In lieu flowers, please make donations to Beulah United Methodist Church.  A memorial service will be held at a later date in Polk
