HAMMER – Duane R. Jr. “Big” or “Sledge,” passed away Sept. 12, 2015, at UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Aug. 30, 1956, in Junction City, Kan., son of Duane R. Sr. and Betty (Karashin) Hammer. Preceded in death by father and sister, Debra College. Survived by loving mother, Betty Hammer, Johnstown; loving sister, Brenda Hammer, Johnstown; loving brother, Donald Hammer, married to the former Susan Knapp, Central City; loving nephews, Michael Nosko and Joseph Hammer; and loving niece, Amy Hammer. Duane attended Johnstown Vo-Tech High School in auto mechanics. He worked at McIlwain Bus Lines as a school bus and charter bus mechanic. He also was a diesel mechanic. Member of Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company and bowled at Westmont Lanes. Duane was known as a gentle giant. At Duane’s request, there will be no viewing or visitation. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Geisel Funeral Home, Johnstown, the Rev. Wilbert Boerstler, officiating. Private interment.
